The best-reviewed animated film of the year had the least demand. Its studio knew.
2026 put eight original animated features into the market across three different release routes. We measured the search demand each one carried before it opened — three term constructions per title, median of the three — and set it against the route the studio chose. The routes line up with the demand and do not overlap.
Wildwood holds a 100% critical score and the lowest pre-release demand of all eight — 720 against Hoppers’ 135,000. It went to event cinema and beat its own projection.
Critical score does not order these films by outcome and never did. Pre-release demand orders them by route. The four wide theatrical titles run from 12,100 to 135,000, the two streaming-first titles from 2,900 to 6,600, and the one event-cinema title sits at 720. No film crosses a band.
The decision this is for
A distribution chief holding a finished original with no franchise behind it, before the print-and-advertising budget is committed. Wide theatrical, event cinema, or streaming-first. Wide commits a nine-figure spend across three thousand screens; event cinema commits a fraction of it; streaming-first commits none of it and gives up the box-office line entirely. The film physically goes to different buildings.
The question is what you can see before you commit. The answer turns out to be less flattering to the instrument and more flattering to the people making the call than we expected going in.
Eight originals, measured three ways each
| Title | Studio | Route | Demand | RT | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hoppers | Pixar | Wide theatrical | 135,000 | 94% | $375.1M global lifetime |
| Gatto | Pixar | Unannounced | 19,600 | — | Unreleased - summer 2027 |
| Forgotten Island | DreamWorks | Wide theatrical | 14,800 | 95% | $20.6M worldwide opening; bottom-five DWA opening; $80M budget |
| Goat | Sony | Wide theatrical | 12,550 | 83% | Topped a quiet February weekend |
| Hexed | Disney Animation | Wide theatrical | 12,100 | — | Unreleased - Thanksgiving 2026 |
| Swapped | Skydance | Netflix | 6,600 | 69% | 15.5M views opening weekend |
| Ray Gunn | Skydance | Netflix | 2,900 | 94% | No theatrical release; $150M+ budget |
| Wildwood | LAIKA | Event cinema (Fathom) | 720 | 100% | Beat a $5-10M projection; ~$100M budget |
Demand is the highest monthly search volume in the twelve months before release, taken as the median of three plausible constructions of the title. Hexed and Gatto have not opened; their figures are the highest month measured to date and are not comparable to a released film’s full pre-release window.
The routes do not overlap
| Route | Range | Titles |
|---|---|---|
| Wide theatrical | 12,100 – 135,000 | Hoppers, Forgotten Island, Goat, Hexed |
| Streaming-first | 2,900 – 6,600 | Swapped, Ray Gunn |
| Event cinema | 720 | Wildwood |
The lowest wide-theatrical title sits at 12,100 and the highest streaming title at 6,600. Nothing crosses.
Which means the distribution chiefs are already reading this correctly. That is the opposite of what the study was built to test. The honest reading is not that search demand predicts the right route — it is that the route already encodes what the studio knew, and search demand is visible enough to see the same thing from outside.
Where the decision actually failed
Forgotten Island was routed correctly and still lost. It went wide on 14,800 — 9.1× below Hoppers, the other wide-theatrical original that worked, and barely above Goat. It opened to $13.0 million domestic and $20.6 million worldwide against an $80 million budget, one of the five lowest openings in DreamWorks Animation history, on 95% reviews.
The route matched the demand. The demand did not support the route’s cost structure. Those are two different decisions and only the first one was made.
Wildwood is the counter-case, and it is the cleanest call in the set. The best-reviewed animated film of the year carries the lowest demand of all eight — a factor of 188 below Hoppers. LAIKA put it into event cinema through Fathom rather than wide, and it opened at $12.2 million against a $5–10 million projection. The reviews had nothing to do with the call, and that is the point.
Why every figure here is a median of three
A single search term is not a measurement of a film. Seven of the eight titles read more than three times differently depending on which plausible spelling you choose.
| Title | Spread | Constructions |
|---|---|---|
| Hexed | 450.0× | 3 |
| Wildwood | 104.2× | 3 |
| Ray Gunn | 31.0× | 3 |
| Swapped | 16.8× | 3 |
| Goat | 7.7× | 2 |
| Forgotten Island | 6.2× | 3 |
| Hoppers | 6.1× | 3 |
| Gatto | 2.2× | 2 |
Our first pass measured each title on one term. On that instrument the Hoppers-to-Forgotten-Island gap read 20.34×. On a second construction it read 3.34×. The median of three reads 9.12×, and both single-term figures were wrong in opposite directions.
Three of the six released titles were carrying demand that belonged to something else entirely: ray gunn overstated by 423×, wildwood movie by 153× — a town in New Jersey and a novel — while hexed movie understated by four, because people search hexed disney.
One film has demand sixteen months before it opens
Gatto, Pixar’s summer 2027 original, reads 19,600 against a pre-announcement baseline of 50 — a factor of 392. Zero through May 2025. The announcement lands in June 2025 and demand never returns to baseline. No trailer campaign, no date in market, no reviews.
If that generalizes, the route decision can be informed a year earlier than it currently is. It is one title on two constructions rather than three, and it is written here as a thread worth pulling rather than as a finding.
What we registered before the data was pulled
| # | Prediction | Band | Basis | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C1 | Median-of-three demand orders the three wide-theatrical originals the same way their opening gross does. | roughly even chance · 45–55% | reasoned inference | Holds. Hoppers 135,000, Forgotten Island 14,800, Goat 12,550 — the same order as $46M, $13M and a modest February weekend. |
| C2 | At least six of the eight titles read more than 3× differently across their three constructions. | likely · 55–80% | measured | Holds, seven of eight. Hexed spreads 450× and Wildwood 104×. Only Gatto, at 2.2×, is stable across constructions. |
| C3 | Gatto, eight months from release, still reads above its own pre-announcement baseline. | likely · 55–80% | reasoned inference | Holds. 19,600 against a baseline of 50. |
| C4 | The franchise controls carry at least 5× the originals' demand. | roughly even chance · 45–55% | reasoned inference | Holds. 13.39× once both sides are measured the same way. |
| C5 | The Hoppers-to-Forgotten-Island ratio lands below 10× on median-of-three. | likely · 55–80% | reasoned inference | Holds at 9.12× — registered against our own published position that the true figure was near 3×. |
Five of five. C5 is the one worth reading twice: it was registered against our own stated position, with a falsifier that named the reversal out loud. It held, and the position we had been arguing in private was wrong.
What this study cannot tell you
- Route was not randomly assigned, and this is the binding limit. Studios chose it knowing their own tracking, test screenings and output deals. The clean bands are as consistent with studios already reading demand correctly as with demand predicting the right route — and the first reading is more likely. Nothing here is causal.
- Three constructions bounds the spelling problem. It does not remove it. A title whose three plausible strings all miss how people actually search is still mismeasured, and no test inside this instrument detects that.
- Two titles have two constructions, not three. One term for Goat and one for Paw Patrol returned no history. The closest comparison on this page — Forgotten Island at 14,800 against Goat at 12,550 — is a 1.18× gap on a banded instrument, which is inside the noise and should not be quoted on its own.
- Search demand is not box office and is not intent to buy a ticket. A family who sees a trailer in front of another film and shows up without searching is invisible here.
- Eight originals, two of them unreleased, and one route represented by a single film. No general rule about original animation survives an n this size.
- No print-and-advertising figure is public for any of the eight. Anything this implies about the efficiency of a route is reasoning, not measurement.
How this page changes
Hexed opens Thanksgiving 2026. A prediction is already registered on it: that it opens above Forgotten Island’s $13.0 million and below Hoppers’ $46.0 million domestic. That prediction is scored on this page in early December whether it holds or not.
Gatto is re-read monthly until it opens in summer 2027. Wildwood’s release month falls outside the current data window and is added at the next pull.
This page is re-run when Hexed opens, and the registered prediction on it is scored here whichever way it goes.
Sound Decisions carries each re-run and each score, with the question written down before the data is pulled.
