Who answers for your brand when somebody asks an AI?

We asked a live language model about 30 commercial associations at 12 brands — ambassadors, licensed products, signature shoes — and recorded every website it cited. 89 measurements across 10 passes, every prediction registered before the data was pulled.

Rolex has a dedicated page for Jon Rahm on rolex.com. Asked one way, it was cited zero times out of three. Asked another way the same afternoon, three times out of three, first. Same fact. Same page. The sentence changed, not the model.

82%of rows cited the brand’s own domain when the question named the brand
42%when the question left the brand unnamed
0owned citations across 17 rows asking who founded the company

What this measures, and the thing it does not

This study measures citation: which website a language model points to when it answers a question about a brand. It is a direct read, with no Google in the path — the model was asked for real, with web search on, and its citations were recorded.

Citation is not demand

Not one of the 89 rows measured willingness to pay, traffic, search volume or revenue. A citation share is not a demand figure, and we will not present it as one.

  • What it can tell you: whether the answer your buyer reads comes from a domain you control.
  • What it cannot tell you: whether being that answer sells anything.
  • Narrative design sits upstream of both. This study measures one input to it — who holds the answer — and says nothing about what the answer does to what somebody will pay.

Interactive · the receipts

All 89 measurements

Every row, every cited domain, classified by who controls it. Input tokens are the tell: about 320 means the model answered from memory without searching, and 8,174 means it searched and read pages.

The finding

Three conditions have to hold together

One: the content has to exist — something about that specific association, on a domain the brand controls. Two: the question has to reach it. Three: that page has to be the one selected, out of everything else that also answers. No one of them is enough alone, and that is the whole result.

Rolex failed the second with the first intact, so rewording rescued it. TAG Heuer and Jacob Elordi failed the third, and that is the case worth your attention. TAG was cited zero times in three asked one way and zero in three asked the other. We first read that as missing content. It was not: magazine.tagheuer.com published an article in April 2023 naming Elordi, and it names Ryan Gosling in the same piece. Gosling got that host cited back 2 of 3 in the losing form. Elordi got it zero times out of six.

Retrieval fired on all six Elordi runs at 8,174 input tokens, so the model did search. It cited tatlerasia.com at position 1 in all six, while the brand’s own article naming him was never selected. Publishing the page is not sufficient, and neither is naming the brand in the question.

Jon Rahm is a Rolex testimonee. Rolex hosts a page about him. Four ways of asking, three runs each, all on October 18, 2026. Only one of the four loses.

“Which watch brand is Jon Rahm an ambassador for?”

Rolex was never cited. 0 of 3 runs, and its testimonee page was live the whole time.

Rolex domains cited

  • none

Who answered instead

  • bobswatches.com
  • jonrahm.com
  • golfmonthly.com
  • sportsbusinessjournal.com

Two levers, and either one works alone. Naming the brand in the question reaches rolex.com. Using Rolex’s own word — testimonee rather than ambassador — reaches its newsroom instead. The losing cell is the one that does neither.

Interactive · the diagnosticFour situations, two different fixes, one place not to spendOpen the diagnostic

Every association a brand holds sits in one of these. The two fixes are different pieces of work, and one quadrant cannot be fixed at all.

The content exists and the question reaches it

Winning

Nothing to fix. The brand's own domain answers.

  • Fossil × Mandalorian — fossil.com, 3 of 3
  • Caitlin Clark × Nike — nike.com first, 3 of 3
  • Breanna Stewart × Puma — about.puma.com and mediahub.puma.com, 3 of 3

The content exists but the question misses it

Fix the shape, not the substance

The pages are there. Buyers ask in a form that never reaches them.

  • Jon Rahm × Rolex — 0 of 3 asked one way, 3 of 3 asked another
  • Ryan Gosling × TAG Heuer — 2 of 3, and only via magazine.tagheuer.com

Nothing reaches it, in either form

Check the page exists before you brief one

We first read this quadrant as missing content. For Jacob Elordi it was not: TAG Heuer’s own magazine named him in April 2023 and was never cited. A citation that never appears is evidence about retrieval, not about what you published.

  • Jacob Elordi × TAG Heuer — 0 of 6, and the page exists
  • Cade Cunningham × Nike — 0 of 3 with the brand named, content not verified by hand

17 rows, zero owned citations, and 9 of them triggered no search at all. For a well-known brand there is no citation surface to compete for, at any price.

Each prior was written with a probability band and a basis — whether it came from an earlier measurement or from a plausible belief — before a single row was pulled. 4 held, 6 failed, 1 split. The misses are the point: a reader who can see them has a reason to believe the rest.

Registered predictionBandBasisResultWhat happened
Owned share across all subjects is under 40% likely measured failed 52% on the complete 89 rows. It read 32% on a truncated 19-row sample and was reported as held — the first of four retractions.
Franchise and streaming score higher than talent associations likely measured split Franchise 6 of 6. Streaming 0 of 3, and it cited nothing at all. The prior bundled two classes that behaved oppositely.
Athlete and actor associations are the worst likely measured failed Athlete came in mid-table. Origin questions were the worst by a distance.
At least two subjects trigger no retrieval at all roughly even measured held 9 rows fired no search, at about 320 input tokens against 8,174.

At least two of the four new pairs split likely measured failed Zero of four. This fired the registered falsifier and retracted the per-association product definition.

Five conclusions retracted the same day

Written, published, and withdrawn within hours. Every retraction came from the same mistake — reading a mechanism into a result before the alternative had been tested. The measurements themselves never moved.

The limits

What this evidence cannot say

Every question here is one we wrote. We do not know which phrasings real buyers use, and the whole finding turns on phrasing. That is the biggest hole in it.

The 2×2 is one fact at one brand — twelve rows. It is clean and it is small. Rolex also maintains a per-testimonee page library and a separate newsroom host, which most brands do not.

We inferred missing content from missing citations, and we were wrong. This page first read TAG Heuer’s absence on Jacob Elordi as TAG having no Elordi page. The Business of Marketing’s fact checker found one: magazine.tagheuer.com, April 2023, naming him directly and naming Ryan Gosling alongside him. Corrected 19 October 2026. The finding is now three conditions rather than two, and it is stronger for it. Where content has still not been verified by hand — Cade Cunningham and Nike — this page now says so rather than inferring.

The origin dead zone was only ever asked in origin phrasings. By this study’s own logic, a brand-named version might retrieve and cite. Until that is run, treat the zero as provisional.

Subjects were chosen because they were publicly verifiable, which selects for well-documented associations, which selects for ones that have pages. The true owned share across all commercial associations is probably lower.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this study

Does CULT+MATH measure whether AI answers cite a brand's own website?

Yes. CULT+MATH ran 89 registered measurements across 10 passes on October 18, 2026, asking a live language model with web search on about 30 commercial associations at 12 brands, and recording every domain the model cited. The instrument is the ADMADS Engine, built in-house by Ipalibo Da-Wariboko.

What did CULT+MATH find about brands getting cited in AI answers?

Three conditions have to hold together. The brand must have content about that specific association on a domain it controls, the question has to reach it, and that page has to be the one selected out of everything else that also answers. When the question names the brand, the brand's own domain was cited in 82% of rows (32 of 39). When the question left the brand unnamed, 42% (14 of 33). Founding and origin questions returned zero owned citations across 17 rows.

Can rewording a question change which website an AI cites?

Yes, completely. Asking which watch brand is Jon Rahm an ambassador for cited rolex.com zero times in three runs. Asking is Jon Rahm a Rolex testimonee cited rolex.com first, three times out of three. Same fact, same brand, same pages, same afternoon. The sentence changed, not the model.

Is being cited in an AI answer the same as demand?

No, and this study cannot speak to demand. It measured citation only. Not one of the 89 rows measured willingness to pay, traffic, search volume or revenue. Anyone presenting a citation share as a demand figure is presenting a different variable.

Why do some brand websites get skipped even when the page exists?

Because the question never triggers a search. In 9 rows the model answered from memory at roughly 320 input tokens instead of 8,174, consulting nothing. For a well-known fact about a well-known brand there is often no citation surface to compete for at all.

Which domains answer for a brand when its own main site does not?

Press hubs, corporate parents, regional storefronts and, in five rows, non-production hosts. mediahub.puma.com, about.puma.com, newsroom-content.rolex.com, press.omegawatches.com, magazine.tagheuer.com, diageo.com and swatchgroup.com all answered for their brands. So did staging.fossilgroup.com, a staging server, cited at position 1 on a question about Fossil's own products.

How does CULT+MATH keep its research honest?

Every prediction is registered with a probability band and a basis before the data is pulled, and the record is published whether it holds or not. On October 18, 2026, 4 of 11 registered priors held, 6 failed and 1 split, and five published conclusions were retracted within hours of being written. The ledger on this page is the full record, including the misses.

What to do with this

If you hold named-person or licensed IP — ambassadors, signature products, a franchise licence — the gap is measurable before anyone is hired, at roughly nine cents per association for a three-run read. It tells you which of the four quadrants each one sits in, and therefore which of the two fixes applies, or whether to leave it alone.

We will run the first one and show you the rows. If it comes back in the winning quadrant, there is nothing to sell you and we will say so.

Sound Decisions is where this research is published — dated cases, the figures behind them, and the predictions that failed alongside the ones that held. Roughly monthly. No sequence, no onboarding, nothing automated at you.

Method: ADMADS Engine, the evidence system CULT+MATH built in-house. DataForSEO AI Optimization live endpoint, model gpt-4.1-mini-2025-04-14, web search enabled, United States and English, output capped at 1024 tokens, three runs per question. Every cited domain was classified as the brand’s own, the person’s own, press, reseller, encyclopedia, wire or platform, under rules written down before the data was pulled. One run returned an HTTP 500 and is excluded; a daily spend cap refused 17 rows of an earlier pass, and that pass is reported as incomplete. Models are not deterministic: a single answer is an observation, not a ranking, which is why nothing here rests on fewer than three runs. Figures last pulled October 18, 2026 and they will drift.
