CPG · Answer

Why are Halloween candy sales down in 2026?

Not because fewer people are celebrating. September 2026 searches for “halloween candy” ran 15.5% above the term’s own 2019–2024 September average, and “when is halloween” ran 35.7% above — while NielsenIQ reported candy sales down 6.7% in the month to October 17. What fell is the discretionary spend around the occasion: decorations are down 58.6% and costumes 36.4% against their own six-year averages. Candy is what households cut last, and it was still cut.

The evidence

Interest in the occasion is at a six-year high.

September 2026 against each term’s own 2019–2024 September mean: “when is halloween” +35.7%, “halloween candy” +15.5%, “trick or treating” −10.6%, “halloween costumes” −36.4%, “halloween decorations” −58.6%. 2025 is excluded from every baseline because that September is an outlier against its own history.

Nobody in the comment corpus is talking about not going.

Across 409 comments about trick-or-treating in 2026, with five terms registered before the pull, “fewer” appeared 0 times and “skipping” appeared 0 times. Only small bags grew this season; large and extra-large fell hardest, which is a household holding the occasion and cutting the ticket.

The price anxiety is specific to candy, and a control measures it.

Five price words registered in advance appear in 17.51% of 531 comments about Halloween candy and 0.65% of 307 comments about Halloween costumes — same holiday, same week, same five words, a factor of 27 apart. Candy and gum prices rose 44% over five years against 22.5% for all food eaten at home.

Cutting price did not bring the volume back either.

Non-chocolate Halloween candy averaged $6.08 a pound in the nine weeks to October 17, about 3% below last year, and sales did not rise. Meanwhile gross margin fell anyway: Hershey 45.4% to 33.5%, Mondelez 40.0% to 28.4%. The price increases covered inputs rather than margin and still cost the category its volume.

What would have to be true for this to be wrong

If your own brand’s entry price point is already at or below the small-bag threshold, this reads differently — the pack lever is spent and the move is distribution rather than architecture. One caveat on the study page: 3% is a small cut against a 44% five-year build, and nothing measured here locates the threshold at which a larger cut would move units.

ADMADS Engine run 811b0454, pulled October 26, 2026 at $0.035 metered against a $0.50 cap: Google Ads search volume via DataForSEO Labs for the United States, and four YouTube comment corpora with every theme term registered in a brief dated before the pull. Sales, price and cocoa figures are NielsenIQ, Circana and US government data as reported by the Associated Press, October 24–26, 2026. Margin figures are a separate study on SEC XBRL company facts, read October 25, 2026. Google bands search volume, so single-band moves are not resolvable; every change cited crosses at least one band. October 2026 is excluded by the instrument as an incomplete month.
