Who won the election night 2026 ratings?

There is no single winner, and the question has three correct answers. Across broadcast and cable, NBC led primetime with 6.740 million total viewers and 2.794 million adults 25–54 — its first broadcast election-night win in total viewers since 2012. Among cable news, Fox News led primetime total viewers at 4.315 million, CNN led adults 25–54 at 1.512 million, and MS NOW led the full 6pm–2am window at 3.520 million. Each of those three is defensible and each was published as a “most-watched” claim without naming the cut it rests on.

The evidence

The three cable claims do not contradict each other.

They answer three different questions. Primetime total viewers, primetime adults 25-54, and the full 6pm-2am window are separate measures of the same night, and a network can lead one while finishing last in another. Fox News leads the first and is fifth of six in the second.

Four of the six networks finish in a different position depending on the measure.

On Nielsen's final Big Data + Panel figures, Fox News is third in total viewers and fifth among adults 25-54. CBS is last in total viewers and fourth in the demo. NBC and ABC hold first and second on both.

The full-window figures have two published versions.

One report of the 6pm-2am window gives 3.520, 3.242 and 2.977 million for MS NOW, CNN and Fox News. A second report of the same window gives 3.3, 3.0 and 2.8 million. The disagreement is recorded here rather than resolved by picking one.

The overall audience figure crosses a possible measurement change.

Nielsen reported 31.2 million primetime viewers across 13 networks against 25.43 million across 12 for the 2022 midterms. Big Data + Panel became the transaction currency on September 1, 2025 and runs higher in aggregate, and no report of the 23% rise states whether 2022 was restated onto it.

What would have to be true for this to be wrong

If a reader means one specific cut when they ask who won, the question has a single answer and this page is over-complicating it. Asked about broadcast and cable together on either published measure, NBC won and nothing here disputes it. The three-answer framing applies to cable news, where the three networks genuinely split the cuts. What would make the page wrong rather than pedantic is a single agreed cut that the trade actually treats as the scoreboard, and no such convention was found.

Nielsen final Big Data + Panel primetime figures for November 3, 2026, as reported by Deadline, Mediaite and The Hollywood Reporter; full-window figures as reported by TV Insider citing Mediaite, with a second conflicting report shown alongside. This is one of six decisions covered in the streaming decision brief — each with the evidence behind it, who owns it, who it is contested with, and what would have to be true for the answer to flip.
