Do AI answer engines and Google cite the same sources?
The evidence
No domain reached two instruments.
ChatGPT cited 7 domains, Perplexity 10, Google 5 organic positions for the same string. The intersection of any pair was empty, and so was the intersection of all three. The full table is published, filterable, on the study page.
The engines did not even agree with each other.
ChatGPT and Perplexity, both answer engines, both asked the identical question three times each, shared no cited domain at all. The disagreement is not between AI and search; it is between every instrument and every other instrument.
Google was less consistent with itself than Perplexity was.
Two phrasings of the same question — “gta 6 release date” and “when is gta 6 out” — put to Google from the same city in the same minute shared one domain of six. Perplexity, asked the same string three times, returned ten of ten identically.
Organic results are a minority of the page.
Depth 10 returned six and seven organic positions. The rest of each Google page is an AI overview, a video carousel and paid units. A statement about organic overlap is not a statement about what a person sees, and this one does not pretend to be.
What would have to be true for this to be wrong
One query string, Houston, Texas, October 24, 2026. ChatGPT gpt-4.1-mini-2025-04-14 and Perplexity sonar via the DataForSEO AI Optimization endpoint, web search enabled, three calls each; Google organic via DataForSEO, depth 10. Platform-default budget-tier models, not the tier a consumer is served.
Every row behind this answer is published in the standing study at cultmath.com/research/games/gta, which is re-run on a schedule and corrected in place, dated.

This is one of six decisions covered in the ai visibility decision brief — each with the evidence behind it, who owns it, who it is contested with, and what would have to be true for the answer to flip.
